Pest Control Houston TX – Wasp Control …
Avoid Disturbing Houston Wasp Nests —
There are many different species of wasps that live throughout Texas.
Wasps are considered to be beneficial creatures in nature due to their ability to kill other insects that destroy crops.
Wasps do however pose a problem for humans and pets alike as their potent venom can be life threatening to anyone that is allergic to their painful sting.
As with other types of creatures in nature, some types of wasps are more aggressive than other types of wasps. Here is some information to help distinguish the difference between wasps…
Yellow Jackets:
These wasps have a bad reputation for being mean and aggressive…and for good reason…they are!
It does not take much to stir up a nest of yellow jackets. Usually yellow jackets will nest underground in an abandoned rodent burrow but sometimes the queen will begin the nest in an old log, a bush, a tree, or hanging from a soffit, etc.
Because they are typically well hidden, it is easy for humans and pets to happen upon yellow jackets and suddenly be attacked by hundreds of angry wasps. Yellow jackets can be angered by children playing in the yard a good distance away from their nest or lawn equipment being used on the opposite end of the yard.
Once wasps are in frenzy, they have been known to chase their intended victim for 2 miles delivering as many stings as possible. Unlike the honey bee, the yellow jacket is able to sting repeatedly without dying.
Paper Wasps:
Paper wasps, such as red wasps. build strong intricate nests that are made of saliva and chewed wood. Paper wasps are small wasps that are beneficial in that they consume caterpillars and other plant harming insects.
So in a limited way they may be good wasps to have near a vegetable garden. Males do not have stingers, but females will sting repeatedly if they are disturbed.
Cicada Killers:
Cicada killers will arrive in July and August. They are large black and yellow wasps that can sting repeatedly if they are provoked. Although they can fly around and appear quite aggressive they don’t often attack,
Cicada killers are not social wasps like other species of wasps. They make their solitary nest site by burrowing a hole in soil.
Wasps of all varieties can pose a hazard to those who are allergic to their venom. Knocking down a wasp nest and using store bought wasp spray will not likely reach deep inside of the nest where the majority of the wasps exist.
And in the case of yellow jackets that are underground, store bought wasp spray is useless.
It is always best to call a pest control company in Houston for professional help with all types of wasp removal.
