Booklice…Annoying Houston Pest!

Booklice is the common name for a tiny insect called psocids.

Despite their name, “booklice”,  are not a louse, nor do they bite humans or animals. Booklice do not transmit any diseases.

Booklice are annoying, however, as they can live abundantly in Texas homes report Houston pest control experts.

Most species of booklice that are found indoors do not have wings.

Adult booklice can be translucent white, gray, or brown in color. They resemble the size of head lice being about 1/16 of an inch long. They have six legs of which the back two are longer than the front four.

These common household pests do not jump or fly, but they are able to run very quickly.

Booklice thrive in environments that are high in humidity as they are attracted to areas where mold grows. Although they will not damage fabric or wood, you can find them living in furniture.

Book lice are attracted to grains or other stored food products.  They can be found infesting cereals, flour, grain, grits, or other types of pantry goodies. These pests become especially abundant during the warm humid summer months.

Since booklice will readily feed on microscopic mold growth, they can often be found in abundance around plants by windows or in or around window sills where dampness occurs.

Booklice receive their name because they are often found among the pages and bindings of old books.

They are common pests in libraries, warehouses that store old records and paper, and warehouses with cardboard boxes.

Office buildings, accounting and billing offices, or other locations that store an abundance of papers or records can provide a prime breeding site for these pests.

Home bookcases and book collections can be a handy target for book lice.

Although booklice do not cause immediate damage to property, they are a nuisance as they will multiply into great numbers in a short period of time.

Since booklice feed primarily on mold growth, it’s important to discover and correct any moisture problems, otherwise mold will continue to grow and booklice activity will persist.

Fans may need to be employed to help dry out some areas and possibly a dehumidifier employed for a time period to help dry the air. Reducing the relative humidity below 50% will help dehydrate and kill off booklice.

Hiring a pest control company in Houston for focused pest control treatment will help to safely eliminate these pests in exposed areas.

However, several re-applications may be needed until the moisture is eliminated and the mold growth is arrested and drys out.

In most cases it is not considered on a benefit-cost basis to fumigate the whole building or drill and treat all the wall voids with a desiccant dust to provide immediate control.
