Houston Danger – The Africanized Honey Bee

Africanized Bees are active in Houston Texas —

Pest control companies in Houston report that Africanized honey bees , otherwise known as Africanized bees, and killer bees were imported to the United States by Brazilian scientists in 1956.

Their original goal was to breed the African bees with the honey bees so that the new breed would become better adapted to the South American tropics. The accidental escape of the bees that were in quarantine in 1957 began breeding with the Brazilian bees which resided locally.

It did not take long for the new and more aggressive bee species to expand their ranges traveling over 200 miles per year in South and Central America. The Africanized honey bees began their invasion of North America around the year 2000.

Honey bees are pretty docile creatures in comparison to other types of flying insects with stingers. Africanized bees are extremely aggressive creatures. They will viciously attack any person or animal that accidentally ventures into their territory, often times for no apparent reason.

These bees use a variety of nesting areas such as sheds, porches, attics, utility boxes, hollow trees, attics, garbage cans, and even abandoned vehicles. So coming upon their nesting site could be quite an easy and unsuspecting event for both humans and pets.

Once Africanized bees become agitated, they will swarm and can attack in mass numbers, often chasing their offenders for up to a quarter of a mile! Africanized bees can be found in Texas including the Houston area, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and California and they show no sign of slowing down their northward expansion.

Because bee stings can cause serious allergic reactions in many people, it’s important to avoid them at all times. Some people experience anaphylactic shock from bee stings which is an extremely serious condition. Anaphylactic shock can cause swelling of the tongue, throat, restricted air flow, and sometimes fatality.

Any swarms of bees or nests that you find on your property should be left alone and instead treated by a Houston pest control expert  like Protex Pest Control.
