Powder post beetle control, treatment, and identification —

Wood destroying pests can be quite troublesome for many Texas home and business homeowners.

Pest control companies in Houston report that next to the voracious appetite of the pesky termite, the powder post beetle is a pest that must be avoided where possible and treated promptly if discovered.

There are two common families of powder post beetles to be most concerned about. These destructive pests are in the Lyctidae and the Anabiidae families.

Unlike the dreaded termite which will typically attack rotting tree stumps, damaged wood, firewood, or dry rotted wood, the Lyctid powder post beetle has a taste for more expensive wood substances. The Lyctid powder post beetles only attack wood manufactured from hardwoods.

These destructive beetles find hickory, walnut, oak, and ash a tasty treat. You can find these types of powder post beetles in hardwood flooring, wood paneling, window and door frames, furniture, molding, and even plywood.

Lyctid powder post beetles are common throughout the United States and here in the Houston area. These wood destroying beetles range in size from 2mm to 7 mm in length. They are elongated, flattened, and typically brown or reddish-brown, but can sometimes be black in color.

Most people do not ever see these destructive and elusive pests. Instead home or business owners might notice a fine flour like powder near the infestation site and/or a variety of circular holes that burrow deep within in the infested wood.

Pest control companies in Houston report that Lyctid powder post beetles live hidden deep within the wood surface, destroying the interior of the wood substance. Once they become adults they bore holes to emerge from the wood to mate in April to July.

Adult Lyctid powder post beetles are nocturnal. They spend their days hiding in cracks and crevices, and their nights flying towards lights and mating. An adult’s lifespan is 1 to 3 months.
